What is the Minnesota Regional Spinal Cord Injury Model System?

The Minnesota Regional Spinal Cord Injury Model System (MN Regional SCIMS) is funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), Administration for Community Living, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to support innovative projects and research in the delivery, demonstration, and evaluation of medical, rehabilitation, vocational and other services to meet the needs of individuals with SCI. NIDILRR awards SCI Model Systems Center grants to institutions that are national leaders in medical research and patient care and provide the highest level of comprehensive specialty services, from the point of injury through rehabilitation and re-entry into full community life.

The MN Regional SCIMS represents an exciting new partnership among the following institutions: Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, Minneapolis, MN; Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN; Regions Hospital, St. Paul, MN; and University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN. This system collectively provides a multidisciplinary continuum of care for people with spinal cord injury, including emergency medical services, acute care services, acute rehabilitation services, and post-acute services. These services will continue to benefit communities in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

Dr. Ann Van de Winckel was awarded the Fiscal year 2022 Spinal Cord Injury and Traumatic Brain Injury Research Grant award for her project, Remotely delivered Cognitive Multisensory Rehabilitation for Sensory and Motor Recovery after Spinal Cord Injury.
